The role of the facilitator is to help a group work effectively together. S/he does this by:

** providing a structure
** providing tools that make the task easier
** asking questions
** listening, summarising and feeding back to the group

During the meeting, the facilitator should remain neutral and objective. S/he should not be part of the decision making process and ideally should not be affected by the decision.

How to be a good facilitator

Do
** Find out about your group - think through the issues or problems that may arise in a session and know how you will respond
** Plan before the event - and work out a rough schedule of activities
** Be flexible - be ready to change or adapt your plan to meet the needs of the group
** Ensure a comfortable learning environment - think about room layout, temperature, refreshments etc
** Start and end on time
** Develop trust and a relaxed, fun atmosphere
** Stay neutral and objective
** Ensure ideas are valued
** Treat everyone with respect
** Ensure everyone participates and no one dominates

Don't
** Have preconceived ideas
** Offer advice
** Criticise
** Impose solutions on the group
** Decide how the organisation should improve
