Originally The Big Picture was designed to help organisations pull together interested people to assess the need for change and to plan, do and review those changes, with the aim of making the organisation better. Most of this booklet is devoted to showing you ways in which you can use the framework in this way.
However, organisations have developed lots of other ways of using The Big Picture, which you might want to consider.
Assessment of strengths and weaknesses
National Playbus used the framework to assess strengths and weaknesses, before moving on to plan a large national conference (the first event of this size that they had tackled). They felt that it had helped them to highlight where they had to bring in expertise from outside and where they had to set up new systems to cope.
Checklist
Patrick Boase (consultant) used another tool, 'the path' to help an organisation to identify where they were aiming. They mapped the draft action plan against The Big Picture as a kind of checklist.
Action for Sick Children mapped their business plan against The Big Picture, to check that all key areas were covered by the plan.
Training needs analysis
SCVO training department is mapping the supply of training in the sector against The Big Picture to see gaps in provision.
Picking and choosing
Tourettes Syndrome Support Group, decided to go straight into the section on planning. They looked at the materials and the 'Tough Questions' in this section. This led them on to thinking about how to include stakeholders in the planning process.
Befriending Network Scotland have a Big Picture slot on each board meeting agenda, each time choosing a new strand to look at.
Personal review of work
Judy Savin, in her former job as director of Scottish Youth Dance, regularly sat down with the pack, analysed the project, focused on an area and set herself an action plan for change.
General reference source
Turning Point Scotland, use The Big Picture framework to talk about quality at staff induction sessions.
Consultation Tool
Wester Hailes Youth Agency used The Big Picture to develop a paper exercise to consult partners, funders, members (including service users) and parents of service users.
