Mission / vision:

Venture Scotland delivers personal and social development programmes, with an emphasis on shared experience and enjoyment in an outdoor setting, for young adults with limited opportunities.

Why The Big Picture?

'The Big Picture is used with a variety of groups in the organisation - the paid staff at meeting and away days; the management committee; with partners and funders to get their views on the organisation. The organisation was keen to use it with their clients / participants to involve them in the decision making process of the organisation.'

How it was used

The peer supporter decided to meet the young people in an informal setting. A trip to Kinlochetive Bothy was planned to do some repair work to a muddy path.

The group met in the evening in the bothy, lit by candlelight. The Big Picture process was first introduced as a personal development tool, ie travelling to Greece was Direction; raising funds and getting a passport and planning was Process; keeping the mates that lent you the money happy was Stakeholder Satisfaction; and learning a language and getting a girlfriend was Positive Impact.

This model was then translated onto the organisation. The young people voted (link for methods of voting) on which area they thought Venture Scotland was particularly good at. They were able to feed back to the management committee that they thought Direction and Positive Impact were good.

Impact and outcomes of using The Big Picture

Young people had a method of scoring the organisation and passing the results to the management committee.
The young adults use The Big Picture tough questions at their planning meetings.

It was evident from this work that a simple version of The Sneak Preview would be useful with language appropriate to this client group.
