This statement was written as a result of using The Big Picture
Why The Big Picture
They felt that The Big Picture was ideal for an organisation with no paid staff and that the language was accessible for board members. The group wanted to expand and wanted to employ a paid member of staff. They wanted to identify what processes they should put in place in preparation.
How it was used
Board members planned three Saturday meetings.
At the first meeting, Planning (from the Processes area of The Big Picture) was identified as an area urgently requiring development. A key tough question was 'Have the stakeholders been consulted and are they committed to plans?' This led the group to identifying their stakeholders in a brainstorming session. They then decided to organise a meeting to consult stakeholders about the organisations priorities.
At meeting two, board members looked at Purpose (from the Direction area of The Big Picture). To help the group discuss their key aims and purpose they made felt pictures. In the next room, children of board members joined in the activity. This is Jenna's picture and how she explained it to her Dad.
'There are two girls, one is me and I have a Tic where I hit my head constantly. The other girl is a friend. She is pointing at me. What I would like is the fingers to stop pointing.'
At this point the aim of the group became clear, their purpose was to stop the finger pointing. They decided that one of the main aims of the organisation was to 'educate the Scottish public about Tourettes Syndrome'.
At
meeting three, participants focussed on 'Strategy and Policy' (from the Direction area of The Big Picture). They wanted to make sure that their objectives were in line with their purpose and to make them measurable, so they could assess if they had been met or not.
Impact and outcomes of using The Big Picture
Stakeholders where involved in the planning process.
The organisation became clearer about its purpose and aim.
Using The Big Picture at meetings made them more focused on development.
Having a peer supporter to help the initial process was very useful.
