Mission / vision:
Is to provide guide dogs, mobility and other rehabilitation services that meet the needs of blind and partially sighted people.
Why The Big Picture?
'The Big Picture can be used by everyone in the organisation, regardless of the level they are at. It is ideal to use at local branch level and with discrete groups. It focuses on the people in the organisation and is not just about process. The other reason we used The Big Picture was the low cost to implement within the organisation. It does not require specialised knowledge of organisational development and quality systems.'
How it was used:
Three meetings were planned for volunteer speakers and drivers. Volunteers travelled from around Scotland to the centre at Larkhall.
At the first meeting the framework was explained. Participants used the scoring grid
and identified that Volunteers (from stakeholder satisfaction) was the most important strand to explore.
At meeting two, participants looked at the tough questions in the volunteers section. They began to identify action points.
At meeting three, more action points were identified then prioritised.
Impact and outcomes of using The Big Picture
Volunteers had an opportunity to identify their needs.
Job titles and skills required for particular volunteer roles were written.
Key areas of support were identified for volunteer speakers ie provision of training, leaflets and badges.
The volunteers did a presentation to management stating clearly what they needed in order to do their jobs effectively.
It was evident from this work that an audiotape version of the sneak preview would have been useful to visually impaired participants in the group. Tapes of the sneak preview are now available from SCVO.
